Artists brought the spirit of Argentina’s La Boca to the back streets of Stockport
Five eminent artists from one of Argentina’s toughest neighbourhoods flew to Greater Manchester last September to work with local people in the community, and fellow artists, to transform one of Stockport’s forgotten backwaters from a nowhere place into a somewhere place, just as they did in La Boca, Buenos Aires. This inspiring project, La Boca to La Stocka, was masterminded by John and Sophie Macaulay, the husband-and-wife team behind Stockport’s *GRIT Studios and Art Battle Manchester. A totally inclusive project, the resulting piece of street art is outstanding! Check out the full story and the completed mural HERE
Stockport Mile Gifted Sculpture Trail
Arts students, led by a graduate from Stockport College, launched a special temporary sculpture trail in celebration of Stockport, to mark the opening of the new Viaduct Park as part of the Town of Culture Weekender celebrations. Called the ‘Stockport Mile Gifted Sculpture Trail’ in recognition of what Stockport has given the group, the sculptures explore the special connections or associations students have with the town through physical form, storytelling, ceramics, industrial materials, collage, mark making or textiles. Visitors were invited to walk the one-mile route stopping to view the different sculptures being displayed in the windows of different shops and venues along the way, any time from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 March or, alternatively, they could join the officially organised walk at 11.30am on the Sunday starting at Viaduct Park. Maps available at the start point or to pick up at other key venues in the town including the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery and Hatworks. There’s also a Trail app developed by the Stockport College art and programming students, which can be accessed via mobile phone. Details can also be found at the map pick up points. More info HERE
Stockport County Star Helps to Paint New Town Centre Mural
A Stockport County star has helped to spray-paint a vibrant Stockport County-themed mural in Edgeley town centre. Occupying a prime location at the junction of Castle Street and Mercian Way, just metres away from the Edgeley Park stadium, this new work of art will be passed by thousands of commuters and pedestrians every day.
During the half-term break, County’s Ethan Pye, spray-paint artist Oskar With A K and poet Ruth Awolola worked with a group of twelve local high school pupils to write, design and paint the mural. The completed mural will pay homage to the Club’s anthem ‘The Scarf My Father Wore’, about a much-loved scarf being passed down through generations of Hatters fans. The project is led by Stockport Council in partnership with Totally Stockport and part funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The new tender has been released this week as part of the council’s Town of Culture status, with four high profile sites in the town chosen to be the home of the new creations.
Stockport’s The Real Public Art Show:
Stockport’s Real Public Art Show captured on video
Stockport’s Town of Culture celebrations was the catalyst to residents’ creative juices flowing to form the Real Public Art Show. Hundreds of works of art capturing many forms of creativity were displayed in an exhibition at Stockport’s War Memorial Art Gallery until last September. Each unique work of art celebrated something, somewhere or someone in the Borough of Stockport. The event has inspired many more people to get creative themselves or to explore places captured in the work. The inspiring stories have been captured on video
Corrine Lawrence’s love of blackbirds has led her to compose Bel Canto and enter her first ever exhibition.
Have you ever listened to the song of a blackbird? Corrine believes it that it even rivals that of the Nightingale with their variety, pitch changes, rhythm and harmony.
It was listening to one particular blackbird’s song (Corinne named him ‘Mr Vivaldi’) that inspired Corinne to capture the sound how it made her feel and put it into a sonnet. Listen to Corrine’s Sonnet, Bel Canto
Levi Gould reads ‘Love Letter to Myself’ – part of Stockport’s Real Public Art Show
Levi Gould, who is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, celebrated Stockport Town of Culture’s Real Art Show with a poem – ‘Love Letter to Myself.’ Levi is a gay man, something that caused him challenges and his catalyst for moving to the UK.
Through his poetry, he has learned to be comfortable in his own skin; he has been able to learn to be even more comfortable with himself by moving from Manchester to Stockport. A Karaoke DJ by night, Levi has lived in Stockport for approximately three years, and he has just received his leave to remain. He has volunteered with Stockport Council at Stockport Moves and now at Stockport war Memorial Art Gallery. He has recently been a portrait model for Stockport Art Guild. Real Public Art Show: Pat Hill’s favourite coffee shop inspired work of art ‘Time for a brew’
Town of Culture provides opportunities to uncover hidden talent; to encourage and inspire people in Stockport to try something new; to be more active and creative – all key ingredients in stimulating improved health and wellbeing. During the summer, Stockport’s first Real Public Art Show, held at the War Memorial Art Gallery, caught the eye of over one hundred creatives of all ages – artists, photographers, poets, writers, ceramicists, and embroiderers – whose work was designed to depict life in Stockport. We caught up with local resident (and now exhibiting artist) Pat Hill who, through Town of Culture initiatives, was inspired to create her own unique work of art depicting an aspect of life in Stockport, albeit a rather unusual subject!

Stockport Museums
Stockport Museums’ Heritage Open Days
Visitors took a Taster Tour of the Hat Factory Floor to give a flavour of Stockport’s hatting history – a story where creativity, ingenuity and skill collided to build a global industry. Many explored Bramall Hall, one of England’s finest timber-framed manor houses – where they learned more about the lives of people who lived and worked at the Hall and took in some exceptional architectural features. Staircase House offered self-guided visits and the Town Centre played host to Stockport’s Modern History and Architecture Walking Tour.
And Wartime Games were a feature of a tour in the Air Raid Shelters where there was a chance to play with some wartime-style toys and find out about some of the other games people might have played while waiting for the ‘all clear’. Heritage Open Days in 2023

Retrospective Exhibition remembering Stockport artist Joan Bradley
In praise of her life, the works of much loved and respected Stockport artist Joan Bradley are being featured in an exclusive exhibition at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery as Stockport continues to celebrate its tenure as Greater Manchester town of Culture. ‘Joan of Art’, who was chairman of Vernon Mill Artists from 2010 until her untimely death in May 2023, was born in Beswick, grew up chalking pictures onto the flagstones outside her house and followed her passion for art throughout her illustrious career.
Inspired by the Impressionist painters, Constable’s oil sketches and Edward Seago’s work, Joan’s work evolved through her love of the city, landscape, people and colour. The tactile quality of the painted surface and a personal language of mark-making to express the vagaries of light, movement and form were important to her. Read more HERE
