Stockport County Star Helps to Paint New Town Centre Mural

A Stockport County star has helped to spray-paint a vibrant Stockport County-themed mural in Edgeley town centre.

Occupying a prime location at the junction of Castle Street and Mercian Way, just metres away from the Edgeley Park stadium, this new work of art will be passed by thousands of commuters and pedestrians every day.

During the half-term break, County’s Ethan Pye, spray-paint artist Oskar With A K and poet Ruth Awolola worked with a group of twelve local high school pupils to write, design and paint the mural. The completed mural will pay homage to the Club’s anthem ‘The Scarf My Father Wore’, about a much-loved scarf being passed down through generations of Hatters fans.

Work began on ‘The Scarf My Father Wore’ mural on Thursday 15th February, and in being completed this week. Stockport County striker Jack Stretton also lent a hand with the spray-painting joining the young people as they bring their ideas to life.

This exciting addition to Castle Street has been made possible as ‘The Scarf my Father Wore’ project has received £14,800 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and is a collaboration between the football club and two north-west organisations, GRIT Studios and The Writing Squad.

Alison Warwood, County Community Trust CEO commented:

“This project shows how art and writing by young people can make a real difference to the local community, and I can’t wait to see the end result.”

John Macaulay from GRIT Studios added:

“We’re thrilled to be involved in such a collaborative and community-spirited initiative. Our young artists will be helping to create a lasting landmark that will become a focal point in Edgeley for years to come.”
