Eric the Elf – a poem for Christmas
'There stood a little fellow, about six inches high, with a pointed hat red jacket, striped trousers and kipper tie.
Local NHS Worker Russel Price is no stranger to poetry having written a beautiful poem to celebrate the Stockport frogs. Now Russel is back to share his Christmas poem – Eric the Elf.
One was woken in the early hours,
on a cold December night,
but surely i was dreaming,
seeing an unusual sight.
There stood a little fellow,
about six inches high,
with a pointed hat red jacket,
striped trousers and kipper tie.
Enquiring are you in my imagination,
or am I under a spell,
give the answer to the question,
and the truth please do tell.
People call me Eric,
I am your Christmas elf,
but if you don’t believe,
that’s up to you so please yourself.
Certainly i accept your presence,
as this is a magical time of year,
I‘d love to know more about you,
as I’m sure there’s nothing to fear.
So he took me on a journey,
whisking me off by the hand,
to find myself in Santa’s workshop,
amongst a winter wonderland.
Seeing lots of his colleagues,
building a multitude of toys,
he smiled at me and uttered,
they’re for all the world’s girls and boys.
That lady is the fairy,
who adorns our festive tree,
and please excuse the noise from the reindeers
They are waiting for their tea.
So how long does your work continue?
“Well each and every day,
until that is we have completed,
filling up yonder sleigh.”
Seated was a jolly white bearded man,
taken aghast I couldn’t breath,
my friend replied don’t worry it’s Saint Nicholas,
after all tonight is Christmas Eve
He’s off to deliver gifts,
to children on what you call earth,
but only if they have been very good,
then get what they deserve.
Suddenly everything seemed to disappear,
as questions went through my head,
only to wake up on the twenty fifth,
with presents around my bed!
Meet Russell:
“I am a sixty year old who lives in the Stockport area and works for the Sterile Services Department at Stepping Hill Hospital. Writing poetry has been a hobby of mine for a number of years and even produced a book of said prose. I have been lucky enough to have had a number of my works used in different formats. For example two poems for the Stockport Frog Auction, the Isle of Man Wallaby Auction and reading at St John’s Church Heaton Mersey on three occasions for Remembrance Sunday. I am currently looking at the opportunities for writing personalised poetry for any occasions and have also recently completed my first fictional short story.”
