Neighbourhoods

Within our Framework Area we have defined three Neighbourhoods, each containing a series of smaller Character Areas. These neighbourhoods have been designed to enhance their existing qualities and character, while also recognising the advantages of connecting the Character Areas more cohesively.

These Neighbourhoods are:

Goyt Riverside is proposed to be brought to life in a park and waterside setting that can be enjoyed by everyone.

  • Re-imagining the northern end of Newbridge Lane to create a residential-led mixed-use community.
  • Revitalising the Fred Perry Way to promote sustainable, active travel.
  • Celebrating Stockport's cultural history.

Historic & Civic Heart

The Civic & Historic Heart will have a mix of uses, such as residential, commercial and leisure to enhance the vibrancy of the area.

  • Strengthening, protecting and celebrating Stockport’s heritage and its unique historical assets.
  • Enhancing crossings over the A6 and providing direct active travel routes to improve safety and accessibility to the town centre.
  • Activating St Petersgate Square into a vibrant and engaging place to go.

Hillgate

By uncovering Hempshaw Brook, Hillgate is proposed to be revitalised to create a nature corridor, blending heritage with modern developments.

  • Calming the traffic through Higher Hillgate to create a pedestrian-friendly heritage trail.
  • Residential-led development to connect communities together.
  • Enhancing pedestrian crossings over Wellington Road and St Mary's Way.

Mayoral Development
Corporation (MDC)

We are also keen to hear your views on expanding the area covered by Stockport's Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC). The Corporation was created in 2019 to bring forward the regeneration of the west of the town centre. Building on its success, we are proposing that the MDC becomes the organisation charged with leading the regeneration of the whole of the town centre, including Town Centre East.
