Celebrating the people powering Stockport: Meet Mel, bringing care to those who need it
Mel Dane is a familiar face for many who might otherwise struggle to access the healthcare they need.
Mel is a nurse practitioner with Mastercall, based at The Wellspring, where she supports people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness with their physical and mental health.
Her colleagues at Mastercall nominated her to be celebrated through #WeAreOneStockport, recognising the work she does and the relationships she has built with the people she supports.
The Wellspring has been supporting people in Stockport for 35 years. Around 1,000 people are registered with the service, with 600 visiting regularly.
Mel has been based there for two years, sharing the nursing role with her colleague, Sheila, who’s been there even longer. On an average day, she sees between 10 and 20 people, providing healthcare and helping them access other health services.
For people who are homeless or vulnerably housed, accessing healthcare isn’t always straightforward. Attending appointments can be difficult, while assumptions about homelessness can make some services feel daunting. Having support somewhere familiar and without judgement from someone they trust can make a real difference.
“The most rewarding part of my job is feeling trusted,” says Mel. “I know people are happy to let me help them, and that feels amazing.”
Some days are quieter and others incredibly busy, but for Mel, it’s about helping people get the care they need.
