We Are One Stockport campaign celebrates the people powering Stockport
From volunteers and community champions to local business owners and frontline workers, a new campaign is shining a spotlight on the people who make Stockport a better place to live, work and thrive.
Launching this summer, We Are One Stockport celebrates the everyday people whose kindness, commitment and community spirit help bring neighbourhoods together and support others.
The initiative will feature inspiring stories from across the borough, encouraging residents to nominate those making a difference and share their stories.
Among the first people to be featured is Mary Dutton MBE, a volunteer from Brinnington who was named Volunteer of the Year at the Stockport Rocks! Awards. Through activities including community groups and Knit & Natter sessions, Mary has dedicated countless hours to helping local people connect and combat loneliness.

It will also highlight the work of Ged McLoughlin from Rainbow Roofs in Reddish, who supports LGBTQ+ residents and helps ensure everyone feels welcome and included in their community.
Ged said: “Everyone deserves to feel safe, comfortable and able to be themselves in their home. That’s why I’m passionate about making sure LGBTQ+ residents are heard, supported and included.”
Another featured hero is Kurt Torevell, a member of the team at Edgeley Library, helping residents access support, services and opportunities to stay connected.
He said: “Working in the library is about so much more than books. It’s about helping people Live Well in the community.”

We Are One Stockport will showcase a diverse range of people who contribute to life in Stockport, from faith leaders and foodbank organisers to youth workers, park volunteers, traders and community connectors. Their stories will be shared through social media, videos, articles, billboards and partner channels across the borough.
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “What makes Stockport such a special place is its people. Every day, across our towns, district centres and neighbourhoods, there are individuals quietly giving their time, supporting others and helping communities thrive.
“‘We Are One Stockport’ is a fantastic way to recognise those contributions and celebrate the people who make our borough stronger, kinder and more connected.
“As we look ahead to a busy summer of community events and celebrations, I hope these stories inspire even more people to get involved, support one another and take pride in everything that makes Stockport such a great place to live.”
Residents will be invited to nominate individuals and community groups to celebrate their achievements, helping ensure that even more stories of kindness, dedication and community spirit are celebrated across the borough.
