Finding connection through Stockport’s warm spaces
Lately, life’s been feeling a bit like a treadmill for Stephen. But this winter his local warm space at Hazel Grove Library has become a place for connection and community. Now he’s encouraging more people to stop by for a hot drink and a warm welcome.
Stephen Platt from Hazel Grove knows all too well how isolating day-to-day life can feel.
Currently not in work and receiving Universal Credit, Stephen spends much of his time alone in his flat. But over the winter months, Stockport’s free warm spaces have become an important lifeline for him.
Stephen visits his local warm space every day, often heading straight for the computers. Over time, he’s come to know the staff well. What started as a simple place to sit has become a friendly, familiar environment where he feels welcomed, understood and included.
“I feel isolated in my flat,” Stephen says. “Coming here breaks my day up. Life can feel like a treadmill but now I’ve got somewhere to come.”
The small gestures make a big difference. Staff greet him by name, offer a hot drink, and check in with how he’s doing. For Stephen, these moments of connection help support his mental health.
He’s also passionate about encouraging others to step through the door:
“I’d recommend people come in. Too many are shut away and isolated, and it’s not good for them. To have this provision is great. We get choccy biccies!”
For Stephen, Stockport’s warm spaces are more than warm – they’re welcoming, reassuring, and vital for people who need a place to feel part of the community again.
