Brinnington boxer crowned European champion after standout year
Brinnington-based boxer Michael Maughan has brought home European gold, inspiring young people across the community.
16 year old Michael Maughan returned from Germany a European Champion after defeating Shukar Aliyev of Azerbaijan at the European Boxing Championships final in December.
It’s a huge achievement for any athlete, but for Michael, who trains at Life Leisure Brinnington Park, it’s proof that dedication, discipline and hard work pay off.

His success hasn’t gone unnoticed – he was recently voted Best Under-17 Male Boxer in England by England Boxing.
Behind the scenes, Michael trains under the guidance of coach Eric Drayson, putting in hours of hard work week in, week out. Tough sessions and relentless focus are all part of his routine.
Eric said:
“What Michael has achieved is just incredible. It shows what young people can achieve through hard work and dedication.”
But Michael’s story is about more than medals and titles. Boxing has given him structure, confidence and a clear goal to work towards. And for many young people across Stockport, sport can offer exactly that – a positive outlet and a sense of belonging.
Local gyms and clubs play a vital role in the community, providing safe spaces, strong role models and opportunities for young people to stay active, build friendships and develop life skills that go beyond sport.

For some, it’s fitness. For others, it’s teamwork and self-belief. For Michael, it’s led all the way to the top of the European podium. Who knows what the future holds – remember the name Michael Maughan!
