Tips to buy toys safely online this Christmas

Tips to buy toys safely online this Christmas

If you’re buying toys as last minute gifts online this festive period, there are a few top tips you can follow to ensure that your children are not put at risk and the toys you buy safe to enjoy.

Many families will be buying toys for their little ones this Christmas, and many of us might turn to online retailers for ease and convenience.

Buying toys from a reputable retailer is recommended, and you should check for the name and address of the manufacturer on the website or packaging. Read ratings and reviews to make sure the toy you are buying is safe and reliable, and look for the CE or UKCA marks on the toy which certify that they reach a standard threshold for quality.

Always heed warnings and instructions on a toy. Age restrictions are based on risks such as choking hazards, so it’s vital that you pay attention to these. Avoid buying toys with small parts for very young children or those with special educational  needs, and be aware that loose ribbons can pose a strangulation risk to young children.

You should always check that the toy hasn’t been recalled: if it has it means it’s not safe to use. Check the Product Recall website to find out.

While it might seem like a great bargain, some toys that are unusually cheap are likely not to be genuine. Counterfeit toys are often not made to safety standards, so you should always ensure you buy genuine – particularly when purchasing electrical goods.

Councillor Helen Foster-Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing at Stockport Council, commented:

“We want to ensure all of our residents stay safe, warm and well this winter. As part of our Christmas safety campaign, we are highlighting the risks of buying unsafe toys online. Many parents and carers will want to treat their little ones or are donating to struggling families this Christmas, so it’s really important that you are aware of the warning signs which could make a toy unsafe. If you can support a local shop or local small business they can help you in person. Shop smart this Christmas to avoid putting children or our loved ones at risk!”
