Stockport Children’s Book Awards ceremony enjoyed by top readers across the borough
This year’s annual Stockport Children’s Book Awards ceremony was held earlier this month, in the spectacular Town Hall ballroom.
Since voting opened for the book awards, children across Stockport have been voting for their favourite read in three age-differentiated categories. Over 25 schools across the borough took part by reading the three shortlisted titles in each category, with children from schools not signed up able to borrow the titles from their local library and vote online.
The ceremony was attended by the shortlisted authors, as well as guests such as the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Graham Greenhalgh. Each school was able to select a ‘reader of the year’, who was presented with a special golden ticket inviting them to the ceremony.
Featuring a balloon artist and a pop up photo booth, the ceremony was a great success and brought together children, teachers and parents from across Stockport for a night to remember!
As well as the winning authors being presented with their prizes, the night also saw the crowning of the winner of the art competition, who took home the top prize of their height in books!
The winning titles were:
- Best Picture Book: The Drama Llama by Rachel Morrisroe
- Best Read for Juniors – Max Counts to a Million by Jeremy Williams
- Best Read for Upper Juniors – The Colour of Hope by Ross MacKenzie
Councillor Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport, who was in attendance on the evening, commented:
“What a great event this was for our young people across the borough! It was fantastic to see so many children engaging with this year’s Book Awards via their schools and local libraries. This initiative really showcases the power of engaging young people with our amazing library service, and sharing the power of reading.
“Hearing some of the stories about children who have learnt English through reading, or have found confidence through reading, or have used their imagination to create amazing artwork based on their reading, was incredible. I want to congratulate all of the young people who received an award on the night!”
