Volunteers Spring into action for planting initiative

Over 14,000 spring bulbs have been planted across Stockport as part of Groundwork Greater Manchester’s ongoing Wild About Stockport initiative.

Groups of local volunteers, including adults who had been referred to Groundwork for wellbeing support, have been busy supporting the project at a series of events through the autumn.

Activities included bulb planting opposite the former Debenhams store on the corner of Wellington Road North and Heaton Lane, on St Peters Square with pupils from St Joseph’s RC Primary School, and at Great Egerton Street next to the Redrock car park entrance.

Volunteers also made bug hotels and replanted the planters on Suffragette Square. Around 8,000 bulbs were planted at Great Egerton Street thanks to Groundwork employees and community volunteers.

Wild About Stockport was set up in 2024 to re-wild the town centre, increase local biodiversity, and connect adults and children to nature in the heart of the town.

The project has been funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and is being delivered by Groundwork in partnership with Stockport Council, Totally Stockport BID, and Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

Judith Baird, community project lead at Groundwork Greater Manchester, said:

Many of our volunteers got involved in this project in order to build confidence, explore new skills, or take gentle steps towards employment after time away from work.

It was rewarding to see how simply being outdoors, learning together, and contributing to the local environment had a positive effect on their wellbeing.
