Keeping Stockport warm: community spaces offer support this winter
As temperatures drop and winter approaches, we’re stepping up to support residents by launching a network of welcoming Warm Spaces across the borough.
This winter, in partnership with Sector 3, we’re funding a network of community Live Well Warm Spaces that will be open to all residents, offering comfort, connection and support when it’s needed most.
The initiative brings together local organisations and volunteers to create safe, friendly environments where you can enjoy a hot drink, take part in activities, and access information about local services. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, find a quiet spot to relax, or simply keep warm, there’s a space for you.
All community Warm Spaces are listed in Stockport Council’s dedicated directory, making it easy for you to find your nearest one and see what’s on offer. The directory is regularly updated with new venues and activities, so be sure to check back for the latest information.
Cllr Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection at Stockport Council, said:
“I’m really pleased to see our Live Well Warm Spaces scheme back for another year, and it’s amazing to see so many local community groups getting involved. I’d like to say a big thank you to all of the fantastic volunteers and staff who help make our Warm Spaces possible and provide such brilliant support for our communities.
We know winter can be a really challenging time, especially for our older residents. Whether it’s a friendly conversation, a safe, welcoming space, or a tasty bite to eat, our Warm Spaces are here to support you.”
Jo McGrath, Chief Executive of Sector 3, said:
“Rooted in local communities, voluntary and community venues play a vital role in supporting residents through winter. Live Well Warm Spaces combine warmth, connection and early support to help people live well in Stockport.”
These Warm Spaces are part of Stockport’s commitment to supporting residents through the winter, building stronger communities, and helping everyone stay healthy and connected. For more details and to find your nearest Warm Space, visit the council’s Warm Spaces webpage.
Last year, our Warm Spaces supported many Stockport residents through the winter months. Here are some of the comments that we received by those people who used the spaces:
- “Lovely to be able to bring the kids and enjoy a brew in the warm.”
- “I particularly appreciate the opportunity to make a hot drink – a god send in the recent freeze up.”
- “Such a fantastic initiative. I’m so pleased to see the Hub used by the community in a real variety of ways.”
- “A place for people to come and relax, play board games and chat. Working well in getting to know people and providing a space for them to feel loved.”
- “Toasty space with a cheery welcome.”
This year, we’ve also opened Warm Spaces specifically for young people. Hosted at Stockroom and community centres across the borough, and run by R Time, these spaces provide safe, welcoming hangout spots where young people can relax, socialise, and take part in activities in a supportive environment. These spaces have been shaped by young people following a launch event in early November. To find a youth night, visit the council’s events calendar.
There is lots of other support available over the winter period. Alongside our partners, we’ve put in place a wide range of initiatives to help you stay warm and well through the winter.
You can access advice and information on the council’s cost of living hub or by calling the cost-of-living helpline on 0161 474 2140. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 4pm.
Warm Spaces are part of the One Stockport Warm & Well and Stockport Live Well initiatives, which aim to make Stockport a great place to live by building stronger communities, providing early help and support closer to home, and helping people live happier, healthier lives.
