Stockport’s top 5 spooky places to visit this Halloween

Stockport’s winding streets and old buildings hide more than just history – they’re home to ghostly legends that have been passed down for generations. From eerie inns to mysterious stairways, here are five of the spookiest places in town. Dare you explore them this Halloween?

1. The Devil’s Steps – St Petersgate Bridge

Now known as Dutton’s Steps, this narrow passageway has one of Stockport’s creepiest legends. In the early 1900s, a church warden’s daughter was supposedly swept off her feet here by a handsome stranger who later revealed himself to be the Devil. When he touched the cross sewn into her dress, he recoiled in fury and stamped his hoof into the stone before fleeing. The girl was said to have lost her sanity, doomed to dance alone under the new moon. Some say you can still hear faint music and footsteps when climbing the steps at midnight.

2. Staircase House – Market Place

This 15th-century townhouse is apparently one of Stockport’s most haunted spots. Visitors and staff have reported cold spots, ghostly figures, and the sound of children’s laughter in empty rooms. With its creaking floors and shadowy corners, it’s no wonder this historic home gives people chills.

3. The Air Raid Shelters – Great Underbank

Carved deep into the sandstone beneath the town, Stockport’s wartime shelters are atmospheric at the best of times. During the Blitz, they provided safety for thousands but some say the echoes of fear still linger. Visitors have reported disembodied voices, footsteps in empty tunnels and an unsettling sense of being followed.

4. Bramall Hall – Bramhall

Bramall Hall is a grand Tudor manor with a haunting reputation. Tales include a ghostly white lady gliding through the hallways and unexplained sounds echoing through the great rooms. With its timbered halls and centuries of history, it’s the perfect setting for a ghost story.

5. The White Lion Inn – Market Place

One of Stockport’s oldest pubs, the White Lion is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man who lingers in the cellar. Patrons have reported strange noises, cold draughts, and the unsettling feeling of being watched while enjoying a pint.

This Halloween, if you’re wandering through the Stockport’s Market Place, venturing down into the Air Raid Shelters, or climbing the Devil’s Steps, take a moment to listen, you never know what you might hear.
