Stockport Mayor attends One Stop Shop Event Promoting Wellbeing and Digital Inclusion
Stockport residents gathered at the Groundwork Centre on Princes Street for a One Stop Shop event designed to showcase the range of local services available through the Support to Succeed programme.
The initiative aims to reduce social isolation, improve wellbeing, and help residents develop new skills through accessible community support.
Groundwork’s team of wellbeing and employment specialists hosted a variety of taster sessions, covering topics such as anxiety management, mental health support, and interactive puzzles and games.
Partner organisations also took part, including The Growth Company’s Money Matters team, who offered expert advice on benefits, pensions, and debt management.
This year’s event also coincided with Get Online Week, a national digital inclusion campaign encouraging people to build confidence in using technology. As part of the campaign, Groundwork delivered digital workshops to help attendees learn how to navigate apps such as the NHS App, recognise online scams, and access one-to-one digital skills training. These sessions take place every Thursday at 12:30 pm at the Groundwork Centre.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Kerry Waters, who praised the initiative for bringing people together and supporting residents’ wellbeing.
“It was so lovely for me and Wendy to pop in and meet all the lovely people at Groundwork. You all do great things for people who really need help when they are struggling and don’t know where else to go for help. Meditation, financial help and helping with CVs for jobs, as well as helping to look for work is just fantastic. I take my hat off for all the hard work you do. Keep doing brilliant.”
Ann Matthews, Coaching and Wellbeing Manager at Groundwork, said:
“We meet lots of people who face daily challenges because everything is online now. People who are looking for work are particularly disadvantaged, as around 90% of jobs are advertised online. Our One Stop Shop events are a great way to introduce people to things they may not have originally considered.”
In attendance at the event were Charles Maduemezia and his nephew, Jotham Fiberesima. Charles shared:
“It’s my second visit to Groundwork today and the first time for my nephew. I found the staff and services very helpful, and we’re planning to engage further. My nephew would like to build his confidence, become more outgoing, and feel comfortable speaking with others. There are lots of services available here that we’ll take up, and I hope Jotham can get involved in some volunteering activities soon.”
