Jollof Rice Festival
21st October 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

| As part of Black History Month in Stockport, chefs from across West African countries including The Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and many others will be showing us their take on the Jollof Rice recipe. So whilst the rice heats up…so will the competition! You may already be aware that there have been great debates across the West African sub-region as to who holds the crown in preparing the best version of Jollof Rice. Each country has a unique offering and interpretation of Jollof Rice. However basic ingredients do not differ: rice, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and spices. Due to the differences in regional recipes, the various regions where Jollof Rice is common are competitive over which variant tastes the best. So although this festival may not decide once and for all, we will be inviting chefs and foodies to judge the dishes! We’ll have several categories including Best Flavour, Best Consistency, Best Presentation and Best Aroma. The chefs will be selling their dishes and you’ll also be able to purchase drinks. Entrance is free. If you are a West African chef based in Greater Manchester with a Jollof Rice recipe – apply to enter our competition! Send your application detailing your cooking experience and food hygiene certification to email@srep.co.uk. Whether you are rooting for your country to win or curious to explore the various regional variations, the Jollof Rice Festival will no doubt be a great event for our ‘Stockport Town of Culture’ celebration. Community will get together, share some food and learn about the cultural significance behind this beloved dish. Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there! |
