Have you ever wanted to experience the thrill and excitement of playing in a steel band but never had the opportunity to try? If so, come along to Stockport Town Centre on Saturday 17th or Sunday 25th February for a unique opportunity to try your hand at this fun and accessible instrument.
The idea has come from Edgeley based John Unwin, one of the regions most experienced Steel Band players and teachers. He plays with several Stockport based Steel Bands, and teaches community and school groups in the area, and the project is supported by Stockport Town of Culture.
“I know how much pleasure people can get out of playing in a steel band, and I want to share this with as many local people as possible. You don’t need any musical experience or special skills – just come along and have a go” said John.
John is hoping to recruit members for a new Stockport Community Steel Band and the support from Stockport Town of Culture means this opportunity is offered free to local people. There will be a few rehearsals on weekends during February and March, and the new group will play alongside some more experienced players at the Town of Culture event on Saturday 23 March in Stockport Town Centre.
John will be demonstrating the steel pans in Stockport Town Centre on Saturday 17th and Sunday 25th February between 11am – 3pm in Mersey Square and invites anyone who wants to find out more to come along. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary!
