Stockport Moves – Free and Fun Ways to Move as part of Stockport’s Town of Culture Weekender
On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March – be inspired to move for joy, move to learn something new or move with others. Stockport we’ve got you covered as part of the Town of Culture Weekender, and everyone is welcome!
As Stockport’s reign as Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture draws to a close, the weekender event is a great opportunity to celebrate the people of Stockport who have been moved to try something new. Over the past year, people of all ages and abilities have had the opportunity to experience new ways to feel good and get healthy.
And in case you’ve missed it, Stockport’s Town of Culture Weekender is packed full of ways to celebrate our town’s culture and to try out new things around our four key themes: Makes, Moves, Sounds and Taste.

Stockport Moves
Working with partners at Life Leisure, Stockport College, Stockport County Community Trust, Walkaday and Mosodi, Stockport Moves brings you a weekender full of fun ways to move more.
There is something for everyone, happening at Stockport’s newest park at the brand new transport interchange – Viaduct Park, across the town centre and beyond
As well as all the events listed below, in Viaduct Park there will free face painting, giveaways, and a vintage ice cream trailer for a little treat postworkout.. Don’t miss out get the dates in your diary and book on the sessions today!

Hatting Walk @ Hat Works
Join hatting expert Sue Lea and travel in the footsteps of hatters on this guided tour of Stockport. Sue will bring to life the the sites and stories of Stockport’s hat trade.

Merseyway and Modernism Walk @ Merseyway
Walk to explore the architecture of Stockport’s groundbreaking Merseyway Shopping Centre and other modern gems. Led by local photographer and artist Steve Marland.

Stockport’s Music Map Walk @ Stockport Museum
Walk exploring highlights of Stockport’s music history including brand new plaques erected as part of Town of Culture projects. Led by local music experts John and Rosemary Barratt.

Stockport Circular Walk @ Viaduct Park
At 11:10am and 12pm there is the option of a 3.5- Mile circular Walking Route (expected to take 90 minutes) starting at Viaduct Park, through the town centre to the River Tame and Reddish Vale Country Park, before returning to the Interchange. The group will be led by an experienced Walkaday leader and will be a great chance to get moving and meet new people. You can drop in on the day or secure a place here with the links below:

Street Art Walks @ Old Town General Store
See over 40 murals and learn about the history and different types of street arts and discover what’s happening in Stockport’s Creative Quarters. 11am-12:30pm & 2pm-3:30pm. Limited places.Booking essential: 11am: via Eventbrite HERE / 2pm: via Eventbrite HERE
Move to a Mile Walk around the Gifted Sculpture Trail @ Viaduct Park
At 11:30am there are more opportunities to get walking with the Life Leisure led Move to a Mile Walk around the Stockport Sculpture Trail. This walk is low impact and open to all abilities, it is a buggy and wheelchair friendly flat circular route around the town centre. You can grab a route map from the gazebo at Viaduct Park, download the Gifted Sculpture Trail App and follow the route to find the sculptures and to learn about the stories behind them. All sculptures have been created by Stockport College Art students, showcasing the range of amazing home-grown talent, which will hopefully inspire and move you. Once you have completed the walk you will receive an official Town of Culture rosette.
Movement & Dance
Tai Chi Taster Session @ Viaduct Park
At 11:15am, 12pm and 12:45pm there will be something a little different from local masters Upward Frog. This 15-minute gentle movement taster will soothe the mind and body. This is a great introduction to a type of physical activity that is low impact but has a wealth of benefits when practiced regularly. Enjoy increased flexibility and strength and improved cardiovascular fitness; the emphasis on correct posture in tai chi can instil a greater awareness of the body and how it moves through space. Tai chi is also a form of meditation helping the mind as well as the body.

Yoga Taster Session @ Viaduct Park
At 11:30am, 12:15pm and 1pm Upward Frog will also deliver a free yoga taster session lasting 15 minutes. Experience a great way to unwind and find some peace in your busy weekend schedule, in the beautiful surroundings of the park. Book here: https://upwardfrogyoga.punchpass.com/classes
Dance Like a Mother @ Viaduct Park
At 11:45am and 12:30pm you can ‘Dance Like a Mother’, or a father with this fantastic parent and babywearing dance class that will welcome you with open arms. For parents with baby’s aged 8 weeks to two years. This is a unique opportunity to have fun and get active whilst dancing to awesome tunes with other parents. Guaranteed to be a fantastic feel-good experience for all involved. Bring your own carrier/sling or use ours, you will get babywearing support from our experienced instructors. More information HERE
