Company Chameleon gets Stockport Moving to celebrate Stockport Town of Culture

During the month of March and ahead of Stockport’s Culture Weekender, Company Chameleon will put dance on the borough’s doorstep, welcoming the community to put on their dancing shoes and come together through creativity and movement.

Activities to look forward to next month including two performances of *Refuse as part of the Creative Weekender plus performances from Chameleon Youth; Movement for Mind in Stockport secondary schools; Movement for Mental Health with Arc and Mature Movers with Diane Amans.
* Refuse is a powerful and moving dance performance, which follows the journey of six people seeking refuge. A play on words, the performance brings home the brutal reality of how people are refused and treated like refuse, when they leave their homeland in search of a better life.

Company Chameleon will deliver a series of community workshop for Stockport residents:

  • Family Friendly – Open workshop for all ages
This family friendly workshop will invite children, young people, and adults to explore, create and play through movement and dance. Fun, warm and welcoming the workshop will focus on the joy of moving together, exploring how we can express ourselves and tell stories through dance.
  • Movement for Mind – a tailored movement project in Stockport Schools
in partnership with Manchester based young people’s mental health charity, 42nd Street, the project will support young people at risk of or experiencing mental health difficulties, including those on the waiting list for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), those already accessing CAMHS support and those at risk of being referred to CAMHS. Over a 6-week period, young people will take part in creative movement sessions which will guide participants through a creative process that will encourage self-reflection, enhance physical well-being, improve communication and team-working skills, and provide a safe space for young people to share, reflect and work towards better mental health.

  • Movement for Mental Health with Arc
‘Movement for Mental Health’ has been developed in partnership with Arc, Stockport’s arts and health charity for adult service users and Stockport residents. The project invites participants to explore the ways in which movement can allow us to express ourselves creatively, improve our mental and physical wellbeing and leave us feeling uplifted.
  • Mature Movers
Company Chameleon, in partnership with Diane Amans, a leading practitioner in Community Dance will deliver a creative movement project for older adults in Stockport. Not just an exercise class, these sessions will engage the whole person, body and mind and develop a community spirit amongst participants, finding connection through dance and creativity.
  • Creative Movement for Older Adults
Since January, mature movers aged 55+, have taken part in creative dance activities ending with a break for refreshments and a chat with the aim of creating a new community for people who might otherwise feel socially isolated.

Town of Culture Legacy – Easter School Holiday Activity Club Following the Town of Culture celebrations and providing a legacy opportunity to get involved with dance and the creative arts, Company Chameleon will deliver an Easter School Holiday Activity Club in the heart of Stockport for young people led by our professional Company Dancers! Over six days, young people from Stockport will learn from professional dance artists and perform for family and friends. Fun, physical and interactive, the Easter School will invite young people to get moving and explore their creative skills through dance. Young people from Stockport will be able to access the Easter School completely free of charge and lunch will be provided.
