Stockport named one of the best places to start a business
Stockport has been named one of the best places in the UK for starting a business in a new study by Markel.
The financial services company ranked Stockport 5th in the UK, based on factors like start-up survival, business closure rates and household income.
We outperformed major North West neighbours including Manchester (31st), Salford (34th) and Liverpool (43rd). And honestly, with the number of independents, makers and start-ups thriving here, are we even surprised?
Stockport scored 9.2/10 for 5-year business survival, showing just how strong and resilient our local economy is. Other highlights included:
- Low business closure rates
- Growing disposable household income, giving new founders more stability
- Fast broadband speeds, giving entrepreneurs a competitive edge
According to Markel, these factors show Stockport has strong foundations for long-term entrepreneurial success.
Rob Rees, Divisional Director at Markel, said:
Small businesses are the backbone of the UK and many of the cities in our study are ideal locations for start-ups to thrive.
Becoming one of the best places to start a business is a key aim of our One Stockport One Future Plan, so it’s great to see a leading financial services company already confirming we’re on the right track.
