Celebrating inclusion at Disability Pride

Celebrating inclusion at Disability Pride

Making Stockport fairer and more inclusive for everyone was a key theme at Disability Pride, held last week at Stockroom in the Town Centre. The event brought together Stockport Council colleagues, community networks, and charity partners to celebrate inclusion, creativity, and connection.

A panel discussion featured Stockport Council’s Deputy Chief Executive Paul Richards, Director of Public Health Jilla Burgess-Allen, EDI Change Lead Talitha Thornton, Cllr Anna Charles-Jones, Leader of the Independent Rate Payers Group, and Michelle Conway, CEO of Keira’s Kingdom. Together, they shared powerful lived experiences and explored the importance of allyship, designing inclusive services and spaces, and the importance of ‘finding your tribe’.

A performance by a singing and signing choir brought inclusive communication to life, while attendees also enjoyed hands-on crafting workshops, information stalls from local organisations, and plenty of opportunities to connect and share.

Councillor Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection, who opened the event, said:

“This is what Stockport’s all about. Bringing people together, celebrating what makes us unique and making sure everyone feels like they belong. Tonight wasn’t just about pride, it was about people, positivity and the power to make a difference.”
