Mad Lab launches Make Stuff Digital Festival in Stockport

MadLab, a community interest company working with technology & people to shape our world for the better, has recently launched Make Stuff – a digital festival for all ages taking place in Stockport.

Make Stuff is hosting a Family Digi Day on March 9th from 10:00am-3:00pm at Stockport Central Library. There will be over 15 activities, experiments, and have-a-go experiences for people of all ages.

Follow the BOOM and come along to feel 1000 watts of bass power though your fingers with Noisy Toys, watch some dancing alien Oobleck (corn flour), make laser-blaster sounds with a slinky, find out how sound waves work, and discover amazing sounds hidden in everyday objects.

Plus! Play a mechanical violin, connect your friends to an electrical circuit to find out how squeaky their noses are, and make a Robot Chicken or Auto-Strummer using upcycled computer guts.

And! making, crafting, coding, and much much more!

Warning! Mild peril and deviant audio!

With over 10 activities to choose from, this promises to be an absolutely fantastic day out.

Who’s it for?
Everyone! Come alone, with a friend, or bring your whole family – we’ll have activities for all ages.

Quiet Hour
Make Stuff Family Edition will be holding a quiet hour for visitors who’d like to enjoy the activities in a less crowded environment. Activities that are sound-based will also be reduced to ensure the comfort of participants.
This will take place between 10am – 11am, and attendance will be capped at 40 visitors, excluding the Make Stuff team of 15 people. To sign up for quiet hour, please make sure you book a ‘Quiet Hour’ Ticket at check-out. One ticket is valid for one person. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a trusted adult. All visitors (including care-givers) will require a ticket.

Quiet hour ticket holders are welcome to stay past 11, but please note that general visitors will arrive at 11am and the venue will likely start getting busy at this point onwards.

What you need to bring / what you need to know
No experience necessary, just roll up and get involved!
Each activity will take 15-20 minutes

Cost
Tickets cost £5 per family.
After the event, you can choose to be refunded or donate your ticket to MadLab CIC to support future community-led events. Refunds will be processed within seven working days. If you cannot afford a ticket, please email makestuff@madlab.org.uk with your name and postcode, and we will be in touch.

Make Stuff is MadLab’s roving digital festival.

Born in 2016, Make Stuff travelled all around community venues in Greater Manchester. In 2017, it won ‘Best Tech for Good Project’ at the Big Chip Awards. Judge Malcolm Garrett said it achieved recognition for ‘encouraging hands-on use of technology and breaking down the barriers between tech that’s transforming our lives. Exemplary engagement across the North.’ The Make Stuff team also helped MadLab win ‘Volunteering Team of the Year’ and ‘Best Community Space’ at the Spirit of Manchester Awards the year after.

Make Stuff had a bit of a rest during Covid, but they’re back for 2024. Bigger, and more ambitious than ever, they’re planning over 100 events in their adopted hometown of Stockport.

If you want to find out more about this or our other projects, head to MadLab, or you can contact us on hello@madlab.org.uk.
