Welcome to Open Door: Stockport’s mental health and wellbeing hub

“Open Door is always open to anyone who needs us. Whether it’s a chat and a brew, creating workable goals or signposting you to the right service: we will stand by your side”

As we continue to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week, Open Door Stockport is shining a light on how you can use the service to support your mental health and wellbeing.

Located centrally in Stockport town centre, Open Door opened last year and is a unique 24/7 mental health crisis service which is open to any Stockport resident. No matter what the issue, Open Door’s dedicated team of recovery workers provide support tailored to your individual needs.

When you visit you’ll see art and cards on the walls from service users expressing gratitude, hear a radio playing in the background and be offered a brew on arrival.

“It’s a welcoming atmosphere as soon as you walk in. When I first started coming to Open Door, I felt suicidal and simply having someone to speak to and a safe place to go to over lockdown has helped. I don’t know if I’d still be here without them” – Service User

Open Door is an NHS-commissioned service which first opened in April 2020 which operated remotely in the first lockdown. Since then it’s quickly established itself as a vital lifeline for the community: now offering face-to-face appointments, walk-ins or a safe space.

Open Door Safe Haven is open 7 days a week from 10am – 8pm on weekdays, 12pm – 8pm on weekends, 72-74 Prince’s Street, SK1 1RJ. There is also a  24/7 helpline which provides emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calling the helpline on 0800 138 7276 can bring a sense of immediate relief. They can also refer directly into the safe haven and provide more information about the services available to you.

“I’m really proud of the service we’ve grown, I think it’s been vital for the community” – Nat Tresise, Recovery Worker

Open Door uses a holistic and person-centred approach, working with you in a way that suits you: offering immediate crisis management, emotional support, structured guided self-help, art therapy groups, a space for support groups, IAPT approved computerised CBT programmes and action plans.

Alongside this, no matter how complex your issues are, Open Door will find a way to support you, signpost you to more appropriate services and ensure that you don’t feel so alone.

Acting Service Manager, Khristine Gallagher, explains

“What makes Open Door so special is the fact that our recovery workers are mental health advocates with lived experience. We have dealt with our own issues in areas like addiction, abuse or specific mental health conditions. We don’t shy away from sharing our stories if it can help you to see a way forward.”

With no referral needed or diagnosis to access Open Door’s safe haven, we can work with you as soon as you walk in.

Trauma informed recovery worker Kieran Sproston explains:
