Stockport tech reseller pledges support to Mayor’s Charity as a Magpie takes flight!

Stockport tech reseller pledges support to Mayor’s Charity as a Magpie takes flight!

Leading the way is Stockport based musicMagpie whose pledge to support the Mayor of Stockport’s annual charity fundraiser includes nominating one of its own to ‘take flight’ and abseil down Stockport Council’s Stopford House.

Businesses in Stockport are being encouraged to take part in events to raise funds for local mental health charity Beacon Counselling by either nominating a colleague to take up the abseil challenge or for the less adventurous, to enter a team in the Stockport Business Quiz 2021.

Leading the way is Stockport based musicMagpie whose pledge to support the Mayor of Stockport’s annual charity fundraiser includes nominating one of its own to ‘take flight’ and abseil down Stockport Council’s Stopford House.

Rising to the abseil challenge is musicMagpie’s Lorraine Beckingham, Office Manager at their Head Quarters at Stockport exchange:

“I’m really not a great lover of heights despite being a proud magpie for over 11 years!  I live right next to the Cheshire ring canal in Marple, just perfect for walks with my feet firmly on the ground.

“In fact I am truly terrified of heights but I’m doing this abseil as I believe that you sometimes have to do things in life that scare the heebie-jeebies out of you. And, trust me, I’m going to be scared but that one small step over the edge will be a giant leap to support Beacon Counselling.”

Cheering Lorraine on will be fellow magpies and musicMagpie’s CEO Steve Oliver. Steve has also pledged to donate £25 for every participant in the abseil as well as providing a top prize in the quiz of an iPad. He has every confidence in Lorraine completing her challenge, not something he himself would relish:

“Despite being 6 foot 6, I’m not a fan of heights so have huge respect for Lorraine who I know will walk it!  But I am delighted to be supporting this year’s Mayor’s Charity fundraising events. It’s been such a difficult year for so many people. It has been humbling to see the way communities have rallied to support each other but there are many more who need help with additional needs, especially with mental health. Beacon Counselling do an amazing job and by raising funds we can be sure they are able to continue to provide valuable support.

“We do love a quiz though; we are quiz fanatics at Magpie and have entered a team ready to take on the greats from Stockport’s business community”

Beacon Counselling was selected by Cllr Dean Fitzpatrick to be the Mayor’s Charity during his tenure in the role. Mayor Fitzpatrick is asking businesses to support his fundraising efforts by nominating a colleague to take part in the abseil on 17th April. Or they can join in the online quizzing evening followed by a small auction and hosted by High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Eamonn O’Neal, on Thursday 25th March from 7pm.

Participating businesses are asked to make a suggested donation of £100 with their entry to support Beacon Counselling who is working hard to improve mental health, resilience, and well-being through counselling, group support, targeted projects, and volunteering.

Cllr Dean Fitzpatrick, Mayor of Stockport:

“This is an exciting opportunity to join me in my fundraising efforts, in aid of an incredible cause that supports people suffering with mental and emotional distress. I am delighted that Steve and the team at musicMagpie are taking part and grateful for both his support and generosity.

“The effects of Covid-19 has brought upheaval and uncertainty to all our lives; nationally there is evidence of an emerging mental health crisis. Through isolation and stress, a lot of people are struggling right now, with depression, anxiety, bereavement & loss, and through very tough economic circumstances. There has never been a more important time to focus on mental health, ensuring people can be resilient – Beacon is a critical part of this urgent response, for the people of Stockport.”

To nominate a team for the Stockport Business Quiz of 2021, donate a gift for the auction or to participate in the abseil you can register your interest at the Mayor’s office on 0161 474 3300 or via email.

Businesses and individuals can otherwise join the Mayor of Stockport in his campaign to raise funds for Beacon Counselling by simply sending a donation via his Virgin Money Giving page.

The latest government rules indicate that the abseil event is hopeful; on the day of the abseil it will comply with the law and the advice of Council Officers.
